One of the unwritten rules of parenting is that if you have a baby you have to install baby gates. Baby gates are meant to keep your toddler safe from injury in places such as at the top and bottom of stairs and in the kitchen, but a new study suggests that the gates may be causing as many injuries as they prevent.

The journal Academic Pediatrics says that around 2000 kids get a visit to the emergency room every year because of safety gate related injuries. The majority was minor bumps and bruises rather than anything overly serious but the injuries came about because the children tried to climb or push on them. The main culprits appear to be gates that are pressured mounted, which might stop crawling babies from falling down the stairs but make for a hazardous perch in the case of wobbly toddlers who attempt to use them to assist them to stand, resulting in the gate toppling over.

Experts recommend the use of bolted baby safety gates wherever possible, especially around stairs.

tweetSocial media brings with it pluses and minuses but there are ways to make sure you can get the most out of it while not embarrassing yourself in the process.

One good tip is to develop your brand, which essentially just means thinking about the one sentence that defines you the best and carrying that with you through all of your online social media profiles.

It is also important to monitor your social media privacy. Even privacy settings are not always one hundred percent secure, particularly on sites that are continually changing them, such as Facebook.

Never use profanity on social media and think before you post or tweet. Freedom of speech is one thing, ending up as the next media headline because of needlessly causing offence is quite another.

It is important to remember that your social media comments can be seen by lots of people, including your college administrators, employers, parents and potential love interests. Do not say anything you would not be comfortable with all of these people seeing.

Work can become a stressful place when basic etiquette is not followed by teachers and directors. Office etiquette is of vital importance due to the fact that bad manners are also bad for business, having a negative impact on employee productivity and morale.

Poor manners also reflect badly on your school when parents see them.  This is one of the main reasons parents note for being unhappy with a child care program.

All employees need to demonstrate good manners. You should not show up to work when you are genuinely sick. Punctuality is important and if you are running late, try to have meetings scheduled in forty five minute increments in order to make sure you have plenty of time to get to the next one.

Meetings should be kept to the scheduled time limit. The next group should not be forced to stand in the conference room because they are waiting for your group to leave.

Cell phones should be placed on vibrate in order to avoid disturbing other people, and you should pay attention and avoid multi-tasking such as checking emails during meetings. Lunch should be eaten in the break room or the cafeteria and not at your desk.

catPets offer us love and companionship. Unfortunately, they also offer allergies to about 10 percent of the population. If getting rid of your cat, dog, or guinea pig isn’t an option, try these tactics for keeping allergic reactions under control:

  • First, get tested. If you’re experiencing allergy symptoms—sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, etc.—visit the doctor first to confirm their origin. Often, the doctor will advise getting rid of your pet, but he or she can also offer suggestions on controlling your reaction.
  • Create a pet-free zone. Keep one bedroom completely free of your dog or cat so you (or whoever suffers the allergy) can get regular sleep. Install high-efficiency filters in your air ducts to limit the spread of allergens throughout your home.
  • Bathe pets frequently. Have your spouse, a friend, or your children wash and brush your pets at least once a week—outside your home, if possible.
  • Clean house often. You may have to vacuum your carpets and fabrics daily, and dust furniture and blinds once a week. If possible, replace carpeting with tile, wood, or linoleum as much as possible to avoid trapping allergens under your feet.
  • Wash hands. Whenever you pick up, cuddle, or otherwise handle your pet, wash your hands immediately, and ask family and visitors to do the same.
  • Keep pets off furniture. Provide a comfortable pet bed for your animal to sleep and rest in, and train pets to stay off couches and chairs. Wash your pet’s bed often.

buy-timeWork-life balance can sometimes be an emotional and psychological matter. One person’s murderous schedule can be normal and healthy to another, depending on their personal beliefs and thoughts. It is important to keep a few mantras in mind to make sure that your balance between work and life does not get thrown out of whack.

One mantra to remember is that working well does not have to mean working more. Some people hide behind the label of being constantly “busy” in the hope that that means they are really getting things done, but working more efficiently, learning how to prioritize and reveling in the creative and energy boost you receive from taking a break now and again is far more important, not to mention healthier.

All too often we hear daycare owners tell us they are too busy to market, yet when we look at their schedule we find they have plenty of time IF they used it wisely.  Learn to break up marketing tasks into small ten minute project that can easily be done over nap times or when their is a small break.

Another mantra to keep in mind is that it is up to you to find your happy work/life balance. Whether your child has a ridiculous schedule when it comes to extracurricular activities, or your boss is absurdly over-demanding, in the end it is up to you what you are willing to put up with and if something really is transgressing your personal boundaries then you need to learn to stand up and say no.

study (2)Everyone wants to learn something at one time or another, but not everybody is always aware of the best ways to learn and memorize. Today, however, researchers are making more and more breakthroughs when it comes to discovering better methods for helping people to learn and retain information.

One good tip is that re-reading the same material is actually less productive for memory and robust learning than trying to recall newly learned information just from memory instead. Students who are quizzed on the material that they have read or which they have been taught in class are also shown to have superior retention and learning than those who are just sent to review the same material over again.

Asking students to try to cope with a new kind of problem prior to giving them the solution also results in them having a better understanding of the nature of the solution than simply giving it to them straight away.

Many students believe that increased effort shows they are bad at learning, when in reality increased effort results in stronger learning and an increase in versatility when it comes to remembering or applying knowledge or skills at a later time.

Tech Tips for School Students

Tech Tips for School StudentsIt can be difficult for students to maintain organization of their work over the course of the school year. With so many tests, projects and assignments, it is far too easy for some things to get mislaid in all of the chaos and without proper maintenance these losses can end up turning into catastrophic situations.

The good news is that new technologies can actually assist students to stay organized. Desks can be kept properly organized while allowing students to communicate their personal style with the use of a wide range of gadgets with touch technology, web-connected printing solutions and detachable hybrid PCs.

An all in one desktop computer can help students to streamline everything from art projects to study aids, book reports and research. Another way to save space is by choosing to make use of e-books via an e-reader, thus removing the need to have lots of books in the classroom, school locker or bag.

Healthy eating is a crucial part of overall good health and there are some helpful nutrition tips for those people who would like to make it a priority to “eat clean.”

5One good tip is to eat more vegetables. Green veggies in particular are low on calories but very high in fiber and vitamins. You should also make a point to consume less sugar by putting a limit on the amount of candy and sodas and other sweet items that you eat and drink. Even flavored yogurt and canned tomato sauce contains a surprising amount of sugar.

You should also cut down on your intake of refined grains, which are more processed than is the case with whole grains and do not have the fiber and nutritional benefits. Substitute brown rice, quinoa or whole wheat for white rice, pasta and bread.

Staying away from packaged food that comes with a long list of ingredients as many of them are lacking in basic nutrients and they also tend to be high in sodium.

You’re not the only person who needs a daily dose of caffeine in some form. A study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 73 percent of young people (up to age 22) consume caffeine on an average day, a figure that’s stayed steady over the decade from 1999 to 2010.

And it’s not just from soda. In fact, caffeine from soda consumption has dropped in the last 10 years, from 62 percent to 38 percent. Kids nowadays are drinking more coffee than before, an increase from 10 percent in 1999 to 24 percent in 2010. They’re also getting caffeine from sweetened tea drinks and other beverages, including energy drinks. Although statistics for energy drinks weren’t available from the early years of the study, by 2010 they represented 6 percent of the caffeine intake of the children studied.
